Workshops and Partnerships

Riggs’ Therapeutic Community Program is an immersion experience in group and organizational dynamics. This became a sustained interest and led to my serving as president of the Center for the Study of Groups and Social Systems (www.csgss.org) in Boston and of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations (www.ispso.org). I’ve also directed or served on the staff of Group Relations Conferences in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel. These conferences, some of which were sponsored by CSGSS, are among the most powerful learning experiences of my life. Various colleagues and I have drawn on this learning to organize several Workshops:

  • Organizational Role Analysis, in which members learn about themselves and their organizations through the window of their experience in their roles;
  • Leading from Experience, in which members learn to use their experience-in-role to lead an understanding of their work lives for themselves and their colleagues;
  • Founders’ Dilemmas, in which founders of non-profits learn about the issues they face, especially as they consider transition out of the CEO role.
  • Developing Leadership Roles – Now and into the Future, A Retreat for Bishops from various denominations, sponsored by the Development Center.

Other colleagues and I came together to form College Health and Counseling Service Consulting (www.chacsconsult.com). This focused consultation service with a diverse expertise tries to help colleges and universities cope with evolving challenges, like increased student demand, the at-risk student, the optimal integration of services, and developing a Wellness program. We have presented our work at regional and national college health meetings, have worked on-site with colleges and universities across the country, and have developed Workshops like the ones below for college leadership.

  • Understanding the Pressures on College Counseling Today, which helps Counseling Service Directors and other college leadership to understand the dynamics of their systems.
  • A Working Group for College Health Leaders, which provides insight and support in monthly small-group sessions.
